Impressionism
This book brings together the most recent research on impressionism and presents it in the political, sociological and philosophical context of the day, showing how the movement truly shocked the establishment. Painters under discussion include not only Edouard Manet, Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Edgar Degas, but lesser known artists such as Berthe Morisot, Mary Cassat and Gustave Caillebotte.

Impressionism This book combines the catalogue of an exhibition at the National Gallery in London from November 1990 to April 1991 with a fascinating treatment of the techniques employed by the Impressionists within a wider context of French 19th-century painting. This includes discussions on open-air painting, the Impressionist use of colour, and the paint layers and surfaces of Impressionist paintings. The core of the book, however, is devoted to a detailed discussion of 15 paintings which were examined using X-radiography, infra-red photography, and the analysis of pigments and paint media. The book is illustrated not only with these paintings and with comparative pictures but also with raking-light and infra-red photographs, X-rays, and cross sections of paint samples. Highly recommended for those interested in the chemistry and techniques employed by impresssionist painters.
